Clyde "Doug" Douglas Swanson, 88, of Nimrod, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn.
He was born to Fred and Sela (England) Swanson on March 25, 1921, in Rosholt, S.D. After completing his schooling, he enlisted in the Army on Oct. 19, 1942 and was honorably discharged on Sept. 24, 1943. He farmed most of his life, he did some carpentry work and he was active in the community. He served on the School Board of District 55 North, Orton Township Board, University of Minnesota Research for Young Farmers, Crow Wing Canoe Trail Board, Tri-County Home Health Care Board and he was a member of the Berg Nylund American Legion Post 456 Sebeka for 50 years. Above all, he was a good husband, father, grandfather and neighbor.
A memorial service was held Monday, June 1, at Sebeka United Methodist Church with the Rev. Loren Ferch officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Berg Nylund American Legion Post 456 Sebeka will provide military honors. Inurnment will be at Lyons Cemetery at a latter date. Arrangements were entrusted to Wevley Funeral Home of Sebeka.
Survivors include Lucille Swanson of Nimrod; three daughters, Victoria (Roy) Iverson of Coon Rapids, Minn., Cheryl (Frank) Arvis of Crosby-Ironton, Minn., Debra Swanson of Nimrod; a son, Duane (Rita) Swanson of Nimrod; a brother, Vernal (Beverly) Swanson of Durham, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Karen; one sister and two brothers.
