Donald Arthur South
Donald Arthur South, 81, passed away peacefully Dec. 10, 2012. He was born Feb. 2, 1931, in Oak Valley Township, Ottertail County.
Son of Ernest Erwin South and Mabel Julia Brumbaugh South, Don grew up in Wadena. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Also, he and his wife Kathryn Hill of Deer Creek moved to northeast Ohio. Don later married Violet Shultz of Texas.
Don worked at Boeing Aircraft and the Washington Co-op as a truck driver in Seattle, Wash. He later started a contracting business siding homes in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Texas for more than 50 years.
He was an entrepreneur, holding multiple patents for aluminum siding component design. Don loved serving his country (Semper fi, Dad!). He was a licensed light airplane pilot, an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoyed country music, and loved his children and grandchildren very much.
Donald was preceded in death by his brothers, Vivien, Richard and Lawrence; and sisters, Francis and Thelma. He is survived by his children, Steven South of Little Elm, Texas, Lyn Sherlock of Falls Church, Va., Lori Ramirez of Alexandria, Va., and Brett Treimer of Hermitage, Pa.; as well as five grandchildren, three stepsons and six stepgrandchildren.
Donald will be buried at Quantico National Cemetery on Dec. 18, 2012, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Wreaths Across America. More information can be found by visiting wreathsacrossamerica.org.
