Deer Creek School open house well attended by students, families and community
Wadena-Deer Creek junior high students and parents got a sneak peak at the renovated Deer Creek School on Monday evening during an open house -- and the response was favorable.
"It's very nice ... very roomy," said parent Yvette Jahnke, whose daughter, Marissa, will be attending the Deer Creek school as an eighth-grader. As Marissa checked out her new locker, she echoed her mother's remarks: "I'm very excited about the school! It's nice!"
The Deer Creek school was cleaned and renovated by WDC custodians and staff this summer after the June 17 tornadoes destroyed the high school.
WDC High School Student Council members gave families guided tours of the school, where teachers and staff were available in their classrooms to answer questions. The WDC Community Service Partnership and the Deer Creek Fire Department grilled and served hotdogs and hamburgers for students and families, who enjoyed eating outdoors in front of the school.
The Deer Creek School closed in June 2006 after serving as the fifth- and sixth-grade school for WDC. On Wednesday, Sept. 1, an open was held for preschool, K-6 and 9th - 12th grade students.
