Wadena-Deer Creek superintendent Virginia Dahlstrom has been chosen to receive the Kay E. Jacobs Memorial Award by the Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA).

The award recognizes Dahlstrom's leadership and involvement provided to MASA and other educational organizations by an administrator with five or less years of administrative experience. Dahlstrom joined District 2155 in the summer of 2008.

"I am very honored to receive this award," Dahlstrom said.

Dahlstrom has been instrumental in rebuilding trust with the community since arriving in Wadena. She was instrumental in passing two levy renferendums in 2009 after the previous two referendums had failed. Since losing the WDC High School in June 2010 to an EF-4 tornado, Dahlstrom has been a key player in finding classroom space for WDC secondary students at other facilities in Wadena and Deer Creek. She has also been part of the effort to rebuild a secondary school in Wadena. Work on the school is scheduled to begin this spring.

Dahlstrom holds a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, a master's in public health from Minnesota State University-Mankato and a Ph.D from the University of Minnesota.

Dahlstrom will receive her award at the MASA/MASE Spring Conference March 17-18 at the Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park, Minn.

Dahlstrom's professional affiliations include membership in the Minnesota Associaton of School Administrators and the Association for Advancement of International Education. She is also a member of Lions International, Rotary, the Wadena Chamber of Commerce and the Phi Delta Kappa Association of Educators.
