Cowboys lasso Wolverines 35-0

Wadena-Deer Creek defenders swarm all over a Breckenridge ball carrier in the Section 6AA quarterfinal game Oct. 22 at Breckenridge.

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wol-verines were not able to scare up any scoring last Tuesday as they fell to the Breckenridge Cowboys 35-0 in the Section 6AA quarterfinals.

With six players nursing injuries, Howie Kangas saw his seventh-seeded club held to 18 yards of total offense The second-seeded Cowboys rolled up 240 rushing yards and passed for 70 more. The Cowboys spread the ball around with eight different players rushing for 25 yards or more.

Nathan Blaufuss, who went 5-for-5 in the air, stung the Wolverines through the air with touchdown passes of 34 yards to Aaron Neppl and 23 yards to Nathan Lorenz.

Jack Hiedeman and Conrad Kondos gave the Cowboys a pair of rushing touchdowns on runs of two and seven yards.

The Cowboys held a comfortable 28-0 lead at the half and then saw Weston Ronan return a third quarter kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown.

“We had a tough time matching up,” Kangas said. “We had too many injuries to sustain anything offensively.”

The Wolverines ended their season with a 1-8 record.

With only three wins over the last two seasons Kangas wants to take a “real good look” at the WDC football program for next year but the veteran football coach already has an idea of what the Wolverines must do to win more games.

“We’ve just got to become stronger and more athletic,” Kangas said.
