"It's an opportunity basically of a lifetime," Ulring told Wadena County commissioners.

He has mixed emotions, he said, but he couldn't say no to the position. The engineer he will work directly with has done award-winning work in cold region engineering and worked on the Alaska Oil Pipeline, Ulring said in an e-mail Wednesday.

Ulring gave notice to Wadena County Board Chairman Dave Schermerhorn a week ago Monday, he said. His resignation is effective Friday, Oct. 23.

"We've accomplished a lot of good stuff here in the short time I've been here and made some good improvement to the transportation system as well as the facilities," he said referring to sentiments he also expressed in his resignation letter.

Ulring began working for the county June 5, 2006. He previously worked as the geotechnical engineer in St. Louis County and as county engineer in Murray County.

He is a graduate of Staples High School and has also lived in Staples for the past 11 years.

"I have enjoyed my time here, but it seems like it's time to move on," Ulring said.

Commissioners accepted
