At its March 27 meeting, Wadena County Commissioners heard from Auditor/Treasurer Char West and Auditor/Treasurer Department employee Rosalie Miller about six options for changing the boundaries of the county's commissioner districts.

The changes are necessary because the county's population increased and shifted during the 10 years between the census of 2000 and the census of 2010. There are now 130 more people living in Wadena County than 10 years ago.

West and Miller presented maps and charts showing the six options, and briefly discussed the advantages and disadvantages of each one.

Because of the population shifts, District One, Lane Waldahl's district, is now too small. Some part of another district needs to be given to District One, and the question is, how best to do that.

• Option One: Add Leaf River Township to District One, and remove it from District Four. But that makes District Four too small, so Bullard Township would be taken from District Two and given to District Four.

• Option Two: Add Leaf River Township to District One, and remove it from District Four. Add Shell River Township to District Four, and remove it from District Five.

• Option Three: Add Leaf River Township to District One, and remove it from District Four. Remove Meadow Township from District Five, and add it to District Four.

• Option Four: Add part of Aldrich Township along County Road 23 to District One, and add the City of Verndale to District One. Remove the City of Verndale from District Two, and add Wing River Township to District Two. Remove Wing River Township from District Four.

• Option Five: Add part of Aldrich Township along County Road 23 and the City of Verndale to District One, and remove them from District Two. Remove Meadow Township and Shell River Township from District Five and add them to District Two. Remove Lyons Township and Nimrod from District Four, and add them to District Two.

• Option Six: Add half of Leaf River Township to District One, and the other half of Leaf River Township to District Four.

The county board will hold a public hearing to discuss the changes and hear public testimony on Thursday, April 26, at 10 a.m. at the Courthouse. Anyone interested in looking at the maps of the proposed options and examining the census figures can do so at the Courthouse, at the Office of the Auditor/Treasurer any time Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
