The Wadena city council approved construction of a concession stand/multi-use building, along with a baseball diamond, for the southwest park area during the regular June meeting, but not before addressing concerns.

Construction conversations arose because of damage from the June 17, 2010 tornado that ripped through Wadena.

A firm called Anderson Johnson and Associates (AJA), hired by the Peterson Foundation to look at the park summer 2011, came up with a conceptual master plan for the southwest park.

City Administrator Brad Swenson said the firm is asking for pay on a per-hour basis for further services, when the city of Wadena usually budgets for a predictable flat fee.

The AJA plan includes taking the hockey and figure rink over to the new tennis court location and putting a new ball field on the location of the old hockey rink.

Rather than paying an outside firm, Mayor Wayne Wolden said the city should work with existing resources.,

Council member Kay Browne said they could get AJA to design structures, but Wolden said Merickel Lumber and Northwest Building Supply would be good candidates.

Swenson said time is an issue, adding that one aspect of the city's budget involves receiving FEMA reimbursement money in batches, which is difficult because the city has to front the money at first.

In the end, Swenson added that the city has to have extra money for such projects, but city leaders also need to build back their reserves, which have dropped in the last couple of years.
