Cory Asfeld, Kelsey Browne qualify for State CC
Wadena Minnesota 314 S. Jefferson 56482

Wadena-Deer Creek's Mid-State All-Conference runners took the next step at the Section 8A cross country championship by earning state berths. Cory Asfeld ran a solid race to place eighth in 17:01.

"We knew Cory had a very good chance to repeat as a state meet entrant, and although his pace was limited by a queasy stomach, he looked under control the whole way, finishing 16 seconds ahead of the last state qualifier," said Wolverine Coach Terry Olson.

Kelsey Browne's qualifying run was much more precarious. Browne was 13th with a half a mile to go, passing three Perham girls to place 10th. She was just four seconds ahead of the 11th place finisher at 16:14.

The girls team ended its season with its best race ever, finishing third out of 15 teams. Hannah Toedter was with Browne until that last half mile, but the hilly course took a toll on her injured hip and she finished one place from All-Section honors in 16th at 16:30. Emily Wood also had a great race only two places behind Toedter in 16:43.

Next came Bethany Papillon, who has seen limited action because of a slight knee injury, running a fast 17:04 for 24th. Just two places back and running a time of 17:06 was Bailee Schissel. Lauren Girard was WDC's number six runner in 68th at 18:52.

The Wolverine girls ran their hearts out, beating one state-ranked team in Park Rapids but behind top-three rated Perham and Staples-Motley.

The boys team earned sixth place and also ran well. Tim Papillon was 34th running a 19:05. Neil Janson was the first of three running a personal record 19:22 for 43rd. Andrew Browne finished a half a second behind Janson. Zach Bernu finished in 53rd with a 19:43 and Chris Papillon was the final Wolverine in 87th.

The Minnesota Class A State Cross Country Meet will be at St. Olaf in Northfield Saturday. Browne will run at 1 p.m. with Asfeld to follow at 2 p.m.
