As an afterthought to the recent election, I think it would be good to reflect on the wisdom of one of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson wrote in 1816 in a letter to a friend: "I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions. But laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well still wear the coat which fitted him when a boy, as for civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."

Far too many of us forget that our founding fathers were not conservative but in fact were liberal in their thinking in respect to the time in which they lived.
