Coming full circle
Lori Schloeder Gress
Over the past year, I have been fortunate enough to serve on the fundraising committee for the Maslowski Wellness and Research Center. While many people ask me "How can you ask people for money?" - the explanation is really quite simple. If you don't ask people for money, how do they know that you need it for a project or cause? And, when it benefits everyone in a community of low incomes and low health outcomes, it is the easiest!
The other common statement was "I wish I could give, but our finances are tight and it isn't possible right now." This became an all too familiar statement as well which is very understandable because not everyone has the financial means to support this project.
While there are literally millions of causes in need of funding, I found it quite rewarding to be involved in the response from the people of and for Wadena. My family has had four generations grow up in Wadena, so when I was asked if I could help out from afar, there was no doubt in my mind that I would love to help because Wadena will always be home.
So, as the donations started to be tallied, many familiar names from Wadena and the surrounding area were in the mix of donors. It made me smile. There was no doubt people would donate - and donate generously they did without condition.
They are the individuals, service providers and businesses from the area that we have all patronized for so many years...healthcare providers, farmers, teachers, auto mechanics, lawyers, truckers, grocers, bankers, insurance agencies, many other businesses and so many more individuals.
We have supported them and now many of them have taken the opportunity to generously support the future generations of Wadena and the surrounding communities. They have profited from our communities and now are giving back to support the future health and welfare of those same communities. You will recognize these generous donors - they are our families, friends and neighbors.
So, I look at this as coming around full circle for many of the individuals, services and businesses in the Wadena area and they are giving back for the support given to their careers over the years, so the money made here will now support and improve the future of the area, full circle in my mind.
Thank you to all the people who have supported the Wadena area businesses over the years, and to all the generous donors who continue to support the future well-being of our communities.
