Comets run past Pirates 27-14
Theo Taylor logged 165 yards on 33 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Hillcrest Comets defeated the Verndale Pirates 27-14 Friday in a penalty-riddled Homecoming contest at Mahlen Field.
Taylor hit paydirt on runs of two, six, six and 25 yards in leading the Comets to their third victory in four decisions.
The Comets struck for first but the Pirates evened the score at 6-all on a six-yard run before the first quarter was over. Two unanswered touchdown runs by Taylor in the second quarter put the Comets on top for good.
Dillon Card found the Hillcrest secondary a tough one to crack but he manged to find Kory Stave open on a 15-yard pass play in the final quarter.
The Comets intercepted Card three times. The big freshman connected on 10 of 20 passes for 118 yards but was picked off three times.
Dallas Ehrmantraut was the biggest gainer for the Pirates with six catches for 62 yards and four rushes for 26 yards. Stave grabbed two balls for 28 yards. Bounds carried 17 times for 40 yards.
Ehrmantraut was credited with 21 stops while Colton Moyer made 16. Stave and Grant Gossinger blocked kicks for the Pirates.
The Comets were flagged 14 times for 140 yards while the Pirates picked up 12 penalties and lost 120 yards.
The loss dropped the Comets to 1-2.
