The second-graders from WDC Elementary School celebrate Christmas Around the World each year the week prior to Christmas. The students of Linda Macklanburg (pictured) learned some of the customs and history of the Irish people. They made a paper candle which is displayed in every window of the homes at Christmas time to light the way for Mary and Joseph and to signify a safe place to enter for those in need. The second grade classes of Carl Tornquist and Vicki Smith also studied a variety of countries and its customs.

Second-graders visiting Mexico learned about the traditional Christmas "posada," a procession through the village as Mary and Joseph search for shelter on their journey. When a home is finally opened to them, the whole village has a party and the children break a piñata. The village repeats this reenactment nightly for nine days. Students also learned about Mexican symbols of pointsettias and luminaries.
