The morning will start out with a panel of speakers, led by Dr. Diomy Zamora, UMN Extension forester/agro forester, who will explore techniques to maximize forage production in wooded pastures while building in long-term capital in high quality timber.

The audience will also have an opportunity to hear first-hand how programs such as EQIP, offered through the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), really work from the perspective of a local producer who has implemented them. NRCS folks will outline a number of their programs and have resource materials available for participants.

David Legvold, Northfield farmer, will address water quality issues and soil preservation, which are very important in our region with its large watersheds and numerous lakes. His theme is "Good land, good farming, better waters."

The afternoon program will concentrate on marketing cattle with a panel discussion led by Randy Pepin, UMN livestock educator. Panelists Troy Salzer, who organized the Central MN Premium Beef Alliance; Mike Stine, owner Stonebridge Beef which sells direct to restaurants in the region and to individual customers; John Eischeid, part owner of Tri-County Livestock Auction; and Gary Sampson, secretary of the Minnesota's Cattlemen's Association, will cover everything from producing consistent animals to marketing strategies for various types of producers.

The day will conclude with a question-and-answer session between the audience and the day's presenters.

The workshop will be held Jan. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., at the Leader Community Center, in Leader, Minn. The cost for the workshop is $15 per person, or $20 a couple, and this includes lunch. The community center is just north of the town of Leader, off of Minnesota Highway 64. For more information contact Mel Wiens at (218) 894-2717, or Ed Maciej at (218) 397-2389.
