Carl Melvin Salo, 90, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at his daughter's home in Becker, Minn., with his wife at his side.
He was born to Nels and Hattie (Aho) Salo on Feb. 26, 1919, in Paddock Township, Otter Tail County. He married Lillian Saarela on May 31, 1941, at the Sebeka Apostolic Lutheran Church. He and Lillian farmed in Rockwood Township, Wadena County, from 1943-73. He worked at CC Camp at Itasca in 1936-37, and on the Iron Range at Coolage in 1953. From 1954-64, he was a car salesman at Stuntebeck Ford in Wadena and from 1964-74 he was the sales manager at Uselman's Chrysler in Wadena. In 1974, he and Lillian moved from their farm in Rockwood Township to their lake home at Oak Point on Rush Lake near New York Mills. They spent their winters in Lake Worth, Fla. from 1973-2003. He was a lifelong member of Sebeka Apostolic Lutheran Church. His hobbies included hunting and fishing and he enjoyed traveling.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 11, at the Sebeka Apostolic Lutheran Church with the Rev. Art Skoog officiating. Honorary pallbearers were all of his friends and neighbors. Active casketbearers were his nieces and nephews. Interment was at the Sebeka West Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Wevley Funeral Home of Sebeka.
Survivors include Lillian Salo, his wife of 68 years, of Becker, Minn.; daughter, Patricia, and her husband, Dale Seavert of Becker, Minn.; sisters, Edna Hietala of Florida, and Lila Savela of Sebeka; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hattie and Nels Salo; three sisters, Ida Hietala, Esther Kimel and Inez Webb; and four brothers, Richard, Walter, Emil and Clifford.
