Staples-Motley's speed and shooting killed the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines Tuesday night in a 79-49 Mid-State Conference decision on the Wadena hardcourt.

Four Cardinals hit double figures as Arden Beachy's squad remained undefeated while handing the Wolverines their first setback in four outings.

Jasmine McGillvray paced a balanced effort with 15 points. Jaelin Beachy and Mikayla Wing tacked up 14 apiece. KyAnn Nyhus brought in 10.

The Wolverines were without a double figure scorer for the first time this year. Melissa Moenkedick and Courtney Dumpprope shared scoring honors with nine apiece. WDC's four big scoring guns: Hope Theisen, Caitlin Volkmann, Emily Miron and Avery Jackson were held to a total of 24 points.

The Cardinals came out fast in WDC's home opener and took a 36-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

"Staples-Motley came ready to play while we were slow getting out of the gate, WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said. "You can't let a good team like that take an early lead. We had an off night; nothing seemed to go our way."

Hope Theisen poured in 16 points and Emily Miron grabbed 17 rebounds Friday as the Wolverines handed the Trojans their first loss of the young season Friday night in Sebeka.

Melissa Moenkedick and Caitlin Volkmann both came up with 15 points for the Wolverines. Volkmann scored all of her game points in the second half. Emily Miron pulled down 17 rebounds and blocked seven shots while scoring 10 points.

Jessica Lillquist paced the Trojans with 17 points while Katianne Brockpahler tacked up 13.

The Trojans won 23 of their 30 games last year and fought their way to the Class A state tournament quarterfinals before falling the eventual state runner-up Nicollet.

"This was a big win for us," WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said. "Melissa Moenkedick and Hope Theisen played great for us. We knew what we had to do to beat them and we accomplished that goal."
