Cardinals fly past Wolverines in Section 6A playoff action
Hunter Schneider came up with four goals and two assists Saturday in sparking the Willmar Cardinals to a 10-1 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek in a Section 6A play-in game at the Willmar Civic Center.
The seventh-seeded Cardinals came out strong against the 10th-seeded Wolverines scoring seven first period goals. Schneider spearheaded the attack with three goals and one assist.
Starting goalie Wesley Janson was replaced by Cory McManigle after allowing five goals. Janson kicked out 15 shots in his appearance. McManigle stopped 21 shots in relief.
The Cardinals out-shot the Wolverines 24-7 in the first period and 18-4 in the second.
The Wolverines were not able to put a point on the board until the 12:05 mark of the second period when Mike Paavola took a feed from Mitchell Swanson.
Zech Streed backed Schneider up with one goal and three assists.
The Wolverines finished the season with a 1-24 record and a 7.48 goals against average.
Wadena Head Coach Chris Holman credited his players with a good effort during the season considering their lack of numbers. The Wolverines only had 12 players in the lineup Saturday for their game with Willmar. The host Cardinals put 19 men on the ice.
"We played hard but we weren't cheap," Holman said. "I saw some really good things."
Putting more players in WDC colors next season will be a priority with the first-year head coach.
"I think it's going to take time," Holman said.
