Cardinals clip WDC

Megan Vetsch fired a five-hit shutout in Game 1 and the Staples-Motley Cardinals completed a Mid-State Conference softball sweep of Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday in Staples.

The Cardinals tacked up a 3-0 victory in the opener as Vertsch out-dueled WDC ace Amanda Perkins.

Christina Wolden doubled for the Wolverines. Tripling for the Cards was Kelsey Zetah. Jasmine McGillivray and Ann Kautto both doubled.

Kyann Nyhus came up with game-winning hit in game 2 as the Cardinals edged the Wolverines 5-4 in eight innings.

Coming up with doubles for the Wolverines were Perkins, Melissa Moenkedick, Michaela Lehmkuhl and Katelyn Peters.

The losses dropped the Wolverines to 4-5 in the Mid-State and 6-7 on the season.

WDC 5-5, Perham 1-3

The Wolverines swept their first Mid-State Conference doubleheader of the season May 6 behind good pitching from Amanda Perkins and Caitlin Volkmann. Perkins held the Yellowjackets to just three hits in the opener.

Avery Jackson supplied the fireworks with her bat, going 2-for-2 with a home run.

Kaitlin Ditsworth collected three doubles in Game 2 as she helped Caitlin Volkmann rack up her first varsity pitching win. Melissa Moenkedick chipped in with two hits.
