Card places third in national mat tournament
Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale freshman Dillon Card placed third in the 23rd annual National Wrestling Tournament March 28-April 1 in Virginia Beach, Va.
Card, who qualified for his first Class A state tournament this winter, won six of his seven 182-pound matches. Card pinned Sal DeSantis of Rhode Island twice in times of 2:52 and 2:10, Jake Atkins of Alabama in 54 seconds and Rick Stewart of Washington at the 1:03 mark. He decisioned David Showunmi of New Jersey 1-0 and edged Thomas Alcaro of Pennsylvania 2-1 in two overtimes. Card lost a 3-2 match to Alcaro in triple overtime in his third match at the national tournament.
Wadena juniors Sam Waln and Tony Reurink both wrestled three times at 113 and 220 respectively. Waln lost to Pankil Chandler of New York 9-1 but topped Daniel Harth of Florida 8-4. He was ousted by Aaron Assad of Ohio, a three-time state finisher and a fifth place finisher in the nationals on a pin at the 3:10 mark.
Reurink pinned Joseph Moore of Nevada at the 2:23 mark but lost a 15-10 decision to Ohio's Vernon Rowe and was pinned by Alaska star Derek Zorea at the 3:10 mark.
BHV sophomores Dakota Finck, Nick Bennett and Andy Bounds wrestled at 138, 152 and 182. Finck pinned Kody Kewrnan of West Virginia at the 2:53 mark befort losing a 9-5 decision to Lugo Zackeny of New York and Cole Diguiseppi of Pennsylvania 6-4. Bennett lost by fall to New York's Angelo Kress at 1:22 but topped Jamal Vaughns of Alabama 8-1. He was ousted by Austin Repp, a third place finisher in the Ohio state tournament, 2-1.
BHV senior Colin Turchin capped his senior season by going 1-2 at the nationals. Turchin was pinned at the 5:36 mark by Michigan's Shawn Rimmer but beat Florida state champ Raheem Haan at the 2:43 mark. Travis Gusan, a state runner-up from Ohio, knocked Turchin out with a 7-4 decision.
