Card leads Pirates past Comets in Pheasant North duel
Dillon Card ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as the Verndale Pirates stopped Pheasant North foe Hillcrest 20-14 Friday night in Fergus Falls.
Cards scored on runs of 2 and 21 yards and hit Dallas Ehrmantraut on a 29-yard scoring route. The Verndale sophomore quarterback racked up 193 yards on a whopping 39 carries. The Pirates had 244 of their 280 total yards on the ground.
Ehrmantraut made both grabs for Verndale to gain 36 yards in the air. His biggest contributions were on defense where he led his team with 14 tackles. Grant Grossinger made 10 tackles in the game. The Pirates limited the Comets to just 89 yards rushing and 89 passing.
The Comets were down 20-0 in the fourth quarter when Theo Taylor scored on a one-yard plunge for Hillcrest's first TD. After a two-point safety, the Comets struck from long range with Dalton Tostenson hitting Jared Christensen on a 37-yard pass play.
The victory boosted Verndale to 3-1 while dropping Hillcrest to 2-2.
