Cantrell places second in Pelican
Charley Cantrell is hitting her stride as a cross country runner.
The Wadena-Deer Creek junior took second in the varsity girls' race Monday as the annual Pelican Rapids Invitational was run at Birchwood Golf Course.
Recruited off the WDC track and field team for her distance running skills by cross country head coach Terry Olson, Cantrell has placed 15th in the season opener at Morris, 10th in the WDC Invitational and second at Pelican. Her 17:03.42 time edged Park Rapids' Alex Pederson for runner-up honors. Pederson ran a 17:05.19. Pederson's teammate, Lydia Lutz, won the race with a 16:24.99.
WDC's Emma Schmitz was also in the top 10. Her 17:33.92 time earned Schmitz ninth place and made her the top eighth-grader in the field of 41 girls.
Will Eliason set the pace for the WDC boys as he ran a ninth place time of 19:25.31. Neil Janson and Zach Bernu were 13th and 16th respectively with times of 19:49.13 and 20:00.53. Joey Pate placed 27th with a 20:54.54 and Brody Wangsness finished 32nd with a 21:47.86. The Wolverines placed fourth in the seven-team meet with a score of 91.
Nevis standout Bryon Shuldt broke the 17-minute barrier with a winning time of 16:57.63. West Central Area's Kyle Toms was second with a 17:49.40.
