Cantrell leads WDC girls track team to third-place finish

Charley Cantrell captured two firsts while Rachel Craig and Logan Meyer each earned one Tuesday in the Hawley Booster Invitational.

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls placed third in a nine-school field with 76 points. The WDC boys placed sixth with 23 points.

Cantrell turned the 800 course in 2:30.63 and after the boys' 800 ran a 5:43.34 to win the 1,600.

Craig placed in four events and won the shot put with a 35-5.5. The senior star also placed third in the discus with a 99-3, third in the high jump with a 4-10 and third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.25.

Meyer continued to dominate the shot put event with a winning 48-3.75. Pelican Rapids' Dan Wood was a distant second with a toss of 42-7.

Lindsey Eliason came up with a third place dash in the 100. The WDC senior was one of three sprinters under the 14 second mark with a 13.97.

WDC's 4x400 relay team of Cantrell, Sarah Craig, Shaye Blessing and Emma Schmitz posted a 4:35.24.

Jordan Jacobson made his mark in the discus with a fourth place throw of 117-1. Meyer was right behind with a 114-foot toss.

Blessing gave the Wolverines a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles with a 53.80 and teammate Lauren Girard was right behind with a 56.06. Blessing a fifth place leap of seven feet in the pole vault while teammate Autumn Jahnke took sixth with a 6-6.

The Wolverines claimed fourth in the 4x200 with a time of 2:01.40. Jahnke, Eliason, Blessing and Sarah Craig ran the event.

Sarah Craig's 14.42 in the 100 dash gave her fifth place. Brody Wangsness was also fifth in the pole vault with a eight-foot jump. Wangsness had a 19.58 effort in the 110 hurdles for sixth place.

Wolverines collect

four firsts at Walker

The Wolverines earned four firsts in the May Day Invitational at Walker.

Rachel Craig was first in the shot put and discus while Charley Cantrell won the 1600, Emma Schmitz captured the 3,200 and Logan Meyer took the shot.

The WDC boys came up with a first in the 4x800 behind the team of Neil Janson, Jeff Webb, Shane Motschenbacher and Will Eliason.

Cantrell earned runner-up honors in the 800 while Jordan Jacobson was second in the discus.

Brody Wangsness took a third in the 110 hurdles.

Leah Eliason, Sonja Kern, Courtney Dumpprope and Sarah Craig made up WDC's 4x100 team that took third. Craig, Kern, Lauren Girard and Shaye Blessing took third in the 4x400 relay.
