Cantrell, Craig, VanDeunheuvel earn runner-up honors

Wadena-Deer Creek's Charley Cantrell and Rachel Craig and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Kathryn VanDenheuvel racked up second place finishes Tuesday in the Section 6A True Team track and field meet in Glyndon.

Cantrell was five seconds off the winning pace in the 1,600 run with a 5:41.6 and added a sixth place time of 2:42.10 in the 800. Craig put the shot 33-10 for her runner-up finish and took sixth in the discus with a toss of 89-5.5. The WDC senior was her team's top scorer in the true team meet with 116 points. VanDenheuvel cleared the high jump bar at five feet.

WDC distance standout Emma Schmitz ran a 13:20.5 for fifth-place honors in the 3,200 run.

BHV runners claiming individual honors included Kasey Willis and Hannah Barrett. Willis placed fifth in the 300 hurdles with a 51.85 while Barrett took sixth in the 100 hurdles with an 18.37.

Double winners in the girls' competition were Park Rapids' Lydia Lutz in the 1,600 and 3,200 and Breckenridge's Kelsey Dahlgren in the triple and long jump.

Park Rapids racked up eight victories to win the girls' title with 902 points. WDC placed 10th in the 17-team field with 513.5 points while BHV took 12th with 479.

The top WDC finisher in the boys' meet was Neil Janson who placed eighth in the 800 with a 2:17.36. Brody Wangsness ran a 20.03 for 10th place in the 110 hurdles and went 7-0 in the pole vault for 12th to lead the WDC boys' scoring with 71 points. Will Eliason gave the Wolverines a 13th place finish in the 1,600 with a time of 5:14.61.

Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's 4x100 relay team ran fourth in a time of 48.57.

Breckenridge's Michael Whitney was a double winner in the 100 and 200 dash events and West Central Area's Beau Kashmark took first in the triple and the high jump. Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal's 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams all captured firsts.

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton won the meet with 939 points. Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale finished 12th with 394 points and WDC was 16th in the 17-team meet with 320.5.

Cantrell earns first

Wadena-Deer Creek's Charley Cantrell posted a first in the 1,600 run with a 5:37.40 Thursday in the Hank Emmel Invitational at Pelican Rapids.

Cantrell added a runner-up finish in the 800 with a 2:33.65.

Rachel Craig also placed high for the Wolverines earning runner-up finishes in the shot put and discus with throws of 34-5.5 and 100-10 and the high jump with a 4-10 effort. Craig's 17.47 time in the 100 hurdles gave her a fifth.

Emma Schmitz picked up an individual third for the Wolverines 12:36.28.

Racking up fifth place points for the Wolverines Shaye Blessing in the pole vault with a 7-0 jump and the 4x200 relay team with a 1:57.08.

Logan Meyer chalked up a runner-up finish in the shot put with a toss of 48-1.
