C-I takes advantage of turnovers
The Crosby-Ironton Rangers got a little more help than they actually needed Tuesday night on the Wadena-Deer Creek hardcourt.
The Wolverines turned the ball over to the Rangers 24 times in a 68-61 Mid-State Conference loss. The victory was Crosby-Ironton's first over WDC since the 2007-08 season when they roared all the way to the Class AA state finals.
"I thought we played a very good game with the exception of the turnovers," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said. "Twenty-four is too many against any team, but against the No. 1-ranked team in AA basketball -- they will make you pay for your errors. If we could have kept our turnovers to less than 15 I think we win by 6-8 points."
The Rangers coughed the ball up 15 times but had four players in double figures led by Mark Hoge with 22.
The Wolverines won several battles on the court. They shot a hot 52 percent from the floor while the Rangers shot a respectable 48 percent. They controlled the boards 33-16.
The Wolverines forced the Rangers to work hard for a skimpy 35-34 halftime edge.
Ryan Nelson had a breakout game for the Wolverines scoring 26 points. The 6-2 senior guard connected on 11 of his 18 field goal shots and was 2-for-4 on threes. Nelson also had eight boards and five assists. Jordan Reed canned 18 points by hitting on six of his 11 deuces and six of his eight free throws. The 6-5 junior also collected a team-high 10 rebounds.
"I really liked our half court defense," VanErp said. "I thought we controlled the tempo well with our man-to-man and zone."
