C-I catches WDC off guard
Mark Hoge kept the Wadena-Deer Creek bats quiet and helped his own cause with three doubles and three RBIs as the sixth-ranked Crosby-Ironton Rangers stunned the third-ranked Wolverines 7-5 last Thursday in the Section 8AA tournament.
Hoge went the distance on the bill and gave up only one run through the first five innings. He gave up four hits, walked four and fanned four.
"The guys seemed really tense, playing not to lose, instead of to win," WDC head coach Kyle Dykhoff said.
Mark Hoge was backed up at the plate by Mike Hoge, who went 2-for-4, scored three times and drove in one run. Brett Arneson went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice and two ribbies.
Ryan Nelson gave the Wolverines their biggest jolt when he jacked a two-run homer. Jake Rude had one hit and scored twice. Cody Redfield and Colter Pettit both came up with a hit and an RBI.
Kevin Tumberg went 5 1/3 innings for the Wolverines. The senior righty struck out eight while walking two.
The Wolverines were guilty of five errors on their home field while the Rangers committed only two.
Dykhoff's Wolverines closed out the season with a 10-9 record.
