John "Butch" Wallace Jr., 65, passed away unexpectedly on July 4, 2009, at his summer home in Perham.

He was born June 3, 1944, in Leavenworth, Kan., to John E. and Kathyrn Biltz Wallace. He graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1962 and entered the Navy after graduation. He served his country for 35 years and retired as a chief petty officer. During his service in Cyprus, he met and fell in love with Eleni Psaropoula and they were married Feb. 17, 1972.

After his Navy service, he was employed by the Department of the Army, Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. He retired from government service in 2006. After retirement, he continued enjoying the family summer home in Perham. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed taking family and friends to his special fishing spots on Big Pine Lake.

Funeral services were July 7 at the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home, New York Mills, with the Rev. Jon T. Haakana officiating. Military presence was by Charles D. Center VFW Post 3289 of New York Mills. A military service will be held at a later date with Davis Funeral Home, Leavenworth, Kan. His final resting place will be the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kan. Survivors include his wife, Eleni; his sister, Joan Van Diepen and husband, Don, of Indianola, Iowa; nephews; two great-nephews and one great-niece; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Janet Eleanor Wallace; and a niece.
