Busy Verndale Pirates fall to Panthers 26-14
Wyatt Samelson's 44-yard run capped a furious fourth quarter of scoring Saturday night and carried Parkers Prairie to a 26-14 victory over Verndale.
Playing their third game in nine days, the Pirates were held scoreless for the first three quarters.
"I think playing three games in nine days kind of caught up with us in that second half," Verndale Head Coach Mike Mahlen said. "We couldn't stop their running game."
The Pirates drove down to Parkers' two-yard-line just before the half but were not able to put the ball in the end zone.
Tyler Schlosser scored the first of his three touchdowns for the Panthers on a 43-yard run in the third quarter.
Trailing 7-0, the Pirates struck first in a 33-point fourth quarter when Dillon Card hit paydirt on a five-yard run. The Pirates jumped ahead 8-7 when Card found receiver Dallas Ehrmantraut open for the conversion.
The Pirates did not have an answer for Schlosser who rambled 47 yards for his second touchdown and 74 yards for his third score.
Card brought the Pirates within six when he hit Kory Stave with a 20-yard aerial.
Schlosser had 165 yards on 14 carries for a terrific 11.7 yard average. The Panthers racked up 272 of their 286 total yards on the ground.
The Pirates did a better job of balancing their yardage. Card was 13 of 19 for 158 aerial yards despite the handicap of a broken big toe that limited him to playing offense. Andy Bounds carried 23 times for 107 of Verndale's 109 rushing yards.
Stave had five grabs for 65 yards while Ehrmantraut caught three passes for 55 yards and Alex Walsvik collected two passes for 29 yards.
Bounds was Verndale's top tackler with 16 stops. Colton Moyer was right behind with 15. Stave and Travis Lollar combined for 22.
The Pirates will be on the road for an MEA Week game with Ashby Oct. 19. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
