Busker's monster game eliminates BHV Legion team
Jalen Busker turned in a monster game Thursday as Staples-Motley clinched a spot in the District 6 tournament by topping Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 11-1 in five innings.
Busker went the distance on the hill and allowed just four hits while walking three and fanning seven.
Busker helped his own cause at the plate by going 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in five runs.
Blake Petrich doubled twice for Staples-Motley, scored twice and drove in a run.
The bottom of Staples-Motley's batting order also came through at the plate. No. 8 hitter Mark Kossan was 2-for-3 at the plate, scored twice and drove in a run. No. 9 hitter Brent Sterriker was 1-for-2 with two runs and two ribbies.
The victory put Staples-Motley in the sub-district title game against Wadena-Deer Creek. Kyle Dykhoff's WDC team beat Staples-Motley 8-4 Thursday evening to take the sub-district title.
Nate Brown had two safeties for Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale and scored his team's only run in the fourth. Mike Mosseau and Matt Fretham collected solo hits.
Ethan Bakken went the first four frames for BHV and was touched for six hits and five earned runs. Bakken walked four and struck out three.
Brown and Dallas Ehrmantraut both pitched relief. Ehrmantraut gave up two hits and two earned runs in pitching a third of an inning. Brown notched another out before giving up a hit and a run that gave Staples-Motley a victory by the 10-run rule.
Staples-Motley played errorless ball. BHV fielders were guilty of four miscues.
BHV Head Coach Steve Riewer credited his young team with some strong performances in the sub-district tournament. The club opened the tournament by edging Park Rapids 7-6 and gave themselves a shot at the sub-district finals by trouncing Sebeka 9-4.
The BHV Legion ended the season with a 6-13 record.
