Wayne "Bud" Nielson, 76, of rural Verndale, passed away Oct. 16, 2009, at his home with his family at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born May 16, 1933 to Peter and Margaret (Threul) Nielson in Howarden, Iowa. Bud's family moved to the Wadena and Sebeka area when he was 9 months old and he grew up in North Germany Township. In April 1953, he entered the Army where he learned the skill of welding and repair, which became his livelihood. Bud was honorably discharged in 1955. He was united in marriage with Charlotte Sullivan on June 15, 1963, and they made their home in Casselton, N.D., where Bud drove a gravel truck. They moved back to the Verndale and Staples area in 1969, purchasing their home in Wing River Township, where they farmed several years. Bud's interests returned to welding and repair work, and he turned the barn into a welding shop in 1982. He used a portable welder until a few years ago when illness kept him from his work.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Hope Chapel in rural Verndale with the Rev. Neal Malcore officiating. Pallbearers are Cody Nielson, Rick Nielson, Jeff Nielson, Ted Majerus, Jim Majerus and Loren Nielson. Interment is in the Wing River Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Johnson Memorial Home in Wadena (www.johnsonmemorialhome.com).
