Braaten, Schmidt survive first round at state tournament
Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Jake Braaten and Amos Schmidt advanced through first round action Wednesday in the Class A State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Braaten was a 13-6 winner over Dover-Eyota's Jake Krogstad at 152. Class A's third seeded wrestler will tangle with Mahnomen/Waubun's Caleb Lanoue in Thursday night's quarterfinals. Braaten placed third in last year's state tournament.
Schmidt chalked up his 35th win in 39 decisions as he edged 171-pound foe Michael Doom of Paynesville Area 6-5. The victory earned Schmidt a shot at LeSueur-Henderson's Josh Willaert in the quarterfinals.
BHV heavyweight Colin Turchin was pinned by Jackson County Central's Jordan Phibbs at the 3:57 mark.
Wadena-Deer Creek's three first-time state entries -- Mitch Steffens, Jordan Rentz and Jacob Wegscheid -- all tasted defeat. Steffens, Class A's No. 9-ranked grappler, lost a 2-0 decision at 112 to Medford's Zach Keller, the state's No. 2 wrestler. Rentz lost a 6-0 decision at 130 to Royalton-Upsala's Odin Guerard. Wegscheid lost by fall at the 2:57 mark to LeSueur-Henderson's Brett Pfaar, Class A's No. 3-ranked 140-pounder.
