Blazers trounce Fairfax in Class C State Tournament
Alex Brockpahler and Patrick Riewer combined for a one-hitter Sunday night as the Bertha Blazers broke into the win column in the Class C state baseball tournament at Glencoe with an 8-2 victory over Fairfax.
Brockpahler, a left-handed draftee from Nimrod, pitched five frames for Bertha and allowed a solo home run by Cody Loverrude in the third. Riewer fanned five and walked just one in four hitless innings of relief. Brockpahler and Riewer were backed up by errorless defense.
Two of the best fielding plays of the night were made by Mike Riewer at on a high hopper that the Bertha third baseman snagged for a 5-3 putout and Dakota Aeling, who made a sliding catch of a pop foul to end the game.
"We just have some great athletes," Bertha skipper Steve Riewer said.
The Blazers, who looking for their first state tournament victory in three straight trips to the state tournament, jumped on the Cardinals in the fourth by scoring five times to grab a 6-0 lead.
Marcus Riewer went 2-for-4 in the lead-off spot and drove in three runs. Nathan Haase and Kyle Zirbes combined for four hits, two runs and three RBIs.
The Blazers will take a 24-7 record into a 7:30 p.m. game Saturday at Glencoe with the Mankato Mets. The Mets advanced through the first round with a 4-2 victory over Sleepy Eye.
"Our next opponent is pretty solid but they are not world-beaters," Riewer said.
