Blades edge Wolverines with third period goal
Clay Bassingthwaite's third period goal broke a 4-4 deadlock Tuesday night and propelled the Breckenridge-Wahpeton Blades to a 5-4 victory over Chris Holman's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines.
Bassingthwaite's game-winner came at the 1:10 mark and earned assists for Aaron Neppel and Tyler Wohlers.
Austin Hagstrom was Breckenridge-Wahpeton's main scoring threat with three goals. Tyler Gripentrog scored a power play goal for the Blades.
Four different players iced goals for the Wolverines in the contest at the Sterns Sports Arena in Wahpeton, N.D. Mitchell Swanson gave the Wolveirnes a 1-0 lead at the 6:53 mark of the opening period on a feed from Shane Motschenbacher. Bridger Pettit put WDC up 2-1 at the 16:15 mark of the first period with an assist from Christian Berg. After three straight goals by the Blades, Mike Paavola scored a power play goal for WDC at 7:35 of the second period. Pettit and Swanson were credited with assists. Otto Asp's power play goal at 13:45 tied the game at 4-all. Mike Behl and Dylan Phillips picked up assists.
Wesley Janson kicked out 21 shots for the Wolverines. Michael Withuski earned the net victory with 40 saves.

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines put the puck on the stick of senior Mitchell Swanson in overtime and he did the rest in a thrilling 5-4 comeback victory Dec. 1 at Eveleth.
Coming off a big effort the previous evening against Ely, the Wolverines found themselves trailing 4-0 in the second period before Mike Behl scored at the 3:56 mark on feeds from Otto Asp and Dylan Phillips.
Phillips cut another point off Eveleth-Gilbert's lead at the 10:08 mark with assists going to Behl and Jake Krause.
Swanson joined the scoring club at the 3:59 mark of the third period with help from Bridger Pettit. The hard-skating Pettit tied the game at the 13:16 mark with a power play goal. Krause and Christian Berg earned assists.
Swanson iced his winning goal at the 2:08 mark of overtime with help from Berg and Mike Paavola.
Cory McManigle chalked up the net victory by recording 28 saves. Derek Hirsch stopped 24 of the 39 shots he faced.

Mitchell Swanson triggered a WDC blitz with five goals Nov. 30 at the Ely Ice Arena.
The senior standout matched teammate Dylan Phillips with two first period goals as WDC jumped on top 5-0. Mike Behl also iced a goal. Christian Berg and Otto Asp both had two assists in the period. Swanson, Phillips, Jake Krause and Mike Behl notched solo assists.
Swanson picked up his hat trick at the 1:08 mark of the second period on a feed from Mike Paavola. He pushed his goal total to four at the 6:44 mark on a power play shot. Berg recorded a playmaker on the goal and Bridger Pettit earned his first assist of the season. Pettit came right back at 14:11 and has scored unassisted for an 8-0 lead.
Behl scored at the 3:48 mark of the final period on a power play shot. Asp was credited with an assist and a playmaker in setting up the goal. The assist gave the Finnish foreign exchange student a playmaker in his first U.S. hockey game.
Swanson capped the scoring at the 15:30 mark when his short-handed goal found the net. Pettit was credited with setting up the goal.
Wesley Janson stopped 17 Ely shots in earning the shutout victory. Ely's Matt Killoran kicked out 32 shots.
