Steve Riewer's Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale baseball crew crushed Park Rapids and Wadena-Deer Creek Monday in first round play at the Sub-District 6 Tournament in Menahga.

The top-ranked BHV nine routed Park Rapids 9-1 in Monday's opener and then thumped No. 2 Wadena-Deer Creek 11-0 in five innings.

Dakota Aeling earned the mound win against Park Rapids with six innings of work. Aeling gave up a run in the first but threw shutout ball for the next five frames. Aeling scattered four hits while walking two and fanning seven. He gave way to Ethan Bakken in the seventh.

Aeling helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three times and homering. Pat Riewer backed him up by going 2-for-4 at the plate with two ribbies and a triple. Jared Hoemberg was solid in the cleanup spot with a double and three RBIs.

Riewer tossed a two-hitter as BHV clubbed Wadena-Deer Creek in the second round with five home runs.

Aeling, Riewer, Hoemberg and Bakken joined Austin Selvey in the long ball parade. Bakken drove in three runs while Selvey brought in two. Riewer went 3-for-3 at the plate and Bakken went 2-for-3.

Ryan Redfield and Colter Pettit laced base hits for WDC.

David Najjar was hung with the loss. Jonathan Goeden was called on in the third after BHV strung together five-run innings in the first and second.

Riewer cruised through his five innings with seven strikeouts and just one free pass.

The top three teams in sub-district play advance to the District 6 tournament this week in Menahga.

BHV 12-14, WHA 1-4

Six Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale players came up with multiple RBI games June 7 en route to a 12-1, 14-4 doubleheader sweep of over Walker in the regular season finale for both teams.

Playing on their home diamond, the BHV club broke open the first game with an eight-run fourth inning. Jared Hoemberg went 3-for-3, scored twice and drove in four runs. Nick Jasmer homered and drove in three runs.

Dustin Motschenbacher allowed just two base hits while striking out two.

Mike Mousseau and Ethan Bakken bomb had a pair of doubles as BHV routed Walker by 10 runs in the nightcap.

Mosseau went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in four runs. Dakota Aeling came up with three hits in three trips, scored twice and drove in four ribbies. Motschenbacher drove in three runs while Autin Selvey drove in two.

Bakken went all the way on the hill for BHV giving up just three hits. Bakken walked two but fanned three.
