BHV Legion earns sweep
Ethan Bakken, Jared Hoemberg and Patrick Riewer combined for 10 RBIs Thursday as the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Legion squad swept Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 12-4, 13-5 in a pair of five-inning games.
Bakken and Hoemberg sparked the BHV attack in Game 1 with seven ribbies. Bakken joined teammates Dakota Aeling and Matt Fretham in hitting home runs. Bakken went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring once and driving in four runs. Hoemberg tripled, drove in three runs and scored three times. Aeling recorded two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Fretham came up with two runs and two RBIs.
BHV broke the game open in the fourth with a seven-run inning.
Bakken went all the way on the mound for BHV walking one and fanning five.
A nine-run first sparked BHV in Game 2.
Riewer came up with only one hit but he drove in three runs. Fretham went 3-for-4 at the plate in the No. 2 batting spot, scored twice, drove in two runs and joined Austin Selvey with a double. Selvey went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in two runs hitting in the No. 3 position. Nick Jasmer and Mike Mousseau combined for three hits, three runs and two RBIs.
Selvey started the game and went the first four frames before giving way to Hoemberg. Selvey walked four and fanned three in chalking up the win. Hoemberg surrendered ne walk and one run but did not allow a hit.
The sweep gave BHV a 14-2 season record. Riewer's team will be seeded No. 1 in the 2011 sub-district tournament and is tentatively slated to face No. 4 Park Rapids or No. 5 Walker Monday at 1 p.m. in Menahga.
