Elizabeth "Betty" Catherine (Merkel) Schmidt, 86, passed away Dec. 2, 2009, at her home in Wadena.
She was born Dec. 20, 1922, to John A. and Catherine (Stein) Merkel in Philadelphia. Betty was united in marriage with Arthur "Bud" Schmidt on March 17, 1956 in Philadelphia. Betty and Bud moved to Wadena in 1968, after Bud's retirement from the Air Force. She was a devoted wife and homemaker, who was also employed as a cook's assistant and dental assistant.
Betty very much enjoyed talking with a wide range of people of all ages. She especially liked children and her pets. She was characteristically proud and guarded her independence and right to self-determination. Remarkably, for many years she diligently kept notes about the significant and even routine events of each day.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 4, in the Johnson Memorial Home Chapel in Wadena, with the Rev. Donald Wagner officiating. Pallbearers were Allan Lynk, Karen Johnson, and Jim Wynn. Burial took place in the Wadena Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Johnson Memorial Home in Wadena (www.johnsonmemorialhome.com).
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, on May 30, 1996; her parents, John and Catherine; an infant sister; and two brothers, John and Edward Merkel.
