The funeral service for Betty Wood of Wadena will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Wadena. Friends may call on Friday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Johnson-Schuller Chapel in Wadena. Visitation will resume on Saturday at the church from 9:30 p.m. until the time of service. Betty passed away on Friday, January 14, 2014, at the Ecumen Care Center in Apple Valley, MN.
Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Wood was born on March 19, 1933 to LaVerne and Mae (Wilson) Rowe at home outside of Hewitt, Minnesota. She was the 9th child of 10 siblings. Betty graduated from Verndale High School in 1951. She attended a one-year teacher training in Staples and her first teaching job was at Messer Rural School. Betty was united in marriage to Laurence Wood on June 19, 1954 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Hewitt. While raising four children, she taught at rural schools in Bluffton, Leader, Baxter and furthered her education at Bemidji State College, where she received a B.S. in Education in 1970. She then taught in Wadena and concluded her teaching career in Verndale, where she dedicated thirty years to teaching primarily fifth grade. She cherished family time, Sunday afternoon drives, Airstream camping, picnics in the yard, scrapbooking and Scrabble.
Betty passed away on January 24, 2014 after a courageous battle with breast cancer, holding Laurences hand and surrounded by her family at her home in Apple Valley, MN.
Betty is survived by Laurence, her loving husband of almost sixty years; children Kim (Sally Ann), Nancy (Larry) Matthews, Mark (Sally Jean), and Brenda Ambe; grandchildren Russell (Andrea), Ryan, Matthew (Polly), Abby (Ethan), Amber, Caleb, Josiah, Levi, Mara and Jena; step-grandchildren Kristie, Lance and Sidney (Roxie); great-grandchildren, Callan, Kessley, and Emlen; step-great grandchildren Sidney and Jaylen; sisters Marjorie, Judith and Genevieve; loyal friend Bonnie Richter; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Verndale, MN.
The family wishes to extend gratitude to all of the compassionate staff of St. Croix Hospice and Ecumen Seasons at Apple Valley.
At the familys request, memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
