Bears surprise Pirates in sub-section battle

Austyn Kvamme (51) and Riley Boehland (15) put the squeeze on Verndale's Eric Blaha (10) in Thursday's North Sub-Section 5A playoff game at Verndale. The seventh-seeded Bears upset the second-seeded Pirates 52-45.

The old sports adage that it is tough to beat a team three times in the same season came true at Verndale Thursday night.

Jordan Hinkle's second-seeded Pirates found themselves on the short end of a 52-45 score in a North Sub-Section 5A basketball game with seventh-seeded Bertha-Hewitt.

Verndale handled Bertha-Hewitt twice during the regular season 78-60 and 64-54.

Pat Riewer, who poured in 40 points in Bertha-Hewitt's Jan. 28 loss to Verndale, led the Bears with 22 tallies. Jordan Frethem scored 12. The Bears made only 37 percent of their field goal attempts on the Verndale court but they impressive at the line making 15 of 18 attempts for an 83 percent clip. Dale Finck's team made five of their 12 three-point shots.

The Bears were able to break up Verndale's inside game and allowed the Pirates to convert on just 27 percent of their field goal attempts. Eric Blaha was held to 11 points and Mitchell Blaha scored 10. Marcos Gomez and James Kveton, two other double figure scoring threats for Verndale this season, combined for just 12 points. The Pirates made just two of their 23 three-point shots.

The Pirates won 20 of their 25 games during the regular season. The Bears entered the sub-section tournament with a 6-19 record.
