Bears slip past Wolverines 59-58
The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines were unexpectedly derailed in Bertha Tuesday night on their way toward the Section 8AA playoffs.
Arei Stokes gunned in 31 points as the Class A Bears upset the Class AA Wolverines 59-58 for the seventh win in their last eight games. Stokes' big game came just four nights after the 5-11 junior center senior wing had a record-setting 30-point performance in an 86-48 loss to state-ranked Upsala.
Emily Miron had a double-double for the Wolverines with 24 points and 13 rebounds. The 6-2 center also blocked nine shots.
Avery Jackson and Caitlin Volkmann chipped in with 14 and 12 points respectively.
Rick Harig's club jumped out to a 16-5 lead on their home court and held a slim 33-32 edge at the half. The Bears did a good job of shutting down WDC's scorers in the second half, allowing just Miron and Jackson to score against them.
The Bears grabbed a double-digit lead in the second half but gave it up to the Wolverines. Harig's aggressive squad recaptured the lead in the final minute of play.
Volkmann and Sydney Schissel tied for WDC assist honors with six apiece.
"We had our chances at the end of the game but we couldn't execute," Wadena-Deer Creek Head Coach Keith Ferris said. "I hope we can learn from this loss and keep our heads up leading into the playoffs."
The loss left the Wolverines with an 18-6 record with two regular season games remaining. The Bears improved to 13-10.
