Bears hand Pirates 9-3 softball loss

The Bertha-Hewitt Bears mauled Verndale pitching for six runs in the second in Tuesday en route to a 9-3 Park Region Conference softball win.

Autumn Aeling drove in three runs for the Bears while joining Trenda Schwantz, Morgan Kapphahn and Hannah VanHale with two hits.

Teresa Moenkedick led the Pirates with two hits in three trips to the plate. Verndale's cleanup hitter also scored once and drove in a run. Lizzy Yungbauer went 2-for-4.

Christine Moenkedick chalked up the pitching win with three innings of help from Aeling. Jenny Swenson went the first four frames for Verndale before giving way to Kirsten Korfe.

Haley Ness fired a one-hitter as the Arrows crushed the Pirates in six frames.

Ness fanned 11 and walked two as the Arrows, who were coming off a 33-4 pounding of Hillcrest Tuesday, ran their season record to 5-0.

Meg Roley went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Arrows.

Kirsten Korfe came up with Verndale's only hit in the six-inning game.

Korfe and Ness were locked in a scoreless duel throught the first our innings. The Arrows broke the bottle in the fifth with a seven-run uprising. Joey Andreasen's club added four in the top of the sixth.
