Barthel, Kern take top honors at Kaatz Invitational
Wadena-Deer Creek's Devin Barthel and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Anthony Kern captured top honors at 145 and 106 last Saturday in the Dennis Kaatz Invitational.
Barthel scored a 7-5 decision over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle's Greg Donabauer in the 145-pound finals. The WDC upperclassman, who has just missed a trip to state the last two seasons, won a 10-2 major decision over Perham's Zach Peterson in the quarterfinals, then topped Trevor Johnson of Pequot Lakes-Pine River/Backus 7-4 in the semis.
Gallant credited Barthel with three "smart" wrestling performances. Johnson and Peterson ended up taking third and fourth in the 145-pound bracket. Donabauer pinned his way to the finals.
"The thing that was impressive was just his composure," WDC head coach Norm Gallant said in praising Barthel. "He had three real tough matches."
Kern paced the Raiders to a third-place finish in team competition. The defending state qualifier pinned Owen Novaceck of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River at the 4:47 mark of their quarterfinal match. A 4-1 decision over Staples-Motley's Eric Lisson vaulted Kern into the finals against PLPRB's Darion Anderson. Kern came up with the winning pin in a time of 1:01.
In addition to Barthel, the Wolverines received a fifth-place finish from Caleb Monson at 220 and a sixth-place performance at 126 from Lee Hotakainen.
Gallant has a young mat squad this year with only three senior lettermen in the ranks.
"We definitely did some good things but we definitely have a ways to go too," Gallant said.
Four BHV wrestlers took runner-up honors. Jiustin Gordon lost a 4-0 decision in the 120-pound finals to BGM's Wyatt Becker. Perham's Colin Neitzke scored a 14-5 major decision over Ethan Kimber at 152. Hayden Truax battled his way to the 182-pound finals before bowing to Perham's William Parks on a fall at the 3:12 mark. Dillon Card lost by default to 220-pound foe Taylor Carlson but scored his 100th career victory in the tournament. Card wrestled his way to the state tournament last year at 182.
The Raiders also saw Nick Bennett pinning Perham's Cole Schmitz at the 4:28 mark of their 170-pound match.
BHV's Marshall Willis lost a 6-2 decision to Perham's Chase Curtis in the 126-pound consolation match. Charlie Nienaber bowed to PLB's Chris Foster 10-4 in the 195-pound finals.
Andrew Cihlar and Dalton Baker gave the Raiders fifth place points at 160 and 285. Zack Waln was sixth at 132.
The Road Crew of Pequot Lake-Pine River/Backus racked up 211 points to take first place in the nine-team invitational.
"They've got a real nice team," Gallant said. "This tournament was really about as tough as I've seen it."
