Area women invited to Fall Friendship Gathering
Enjoy a Sunday evening with food, fellowship and a quilt presentation at a Fall Friendship Gathering on Oct. 24 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bertha. The church's Christian Mothers group is sponsoring the event open to women of all faiths in the area.
Fellowship starts at 5 p.m., followed by a light lunch of salads and sweet breads at 5:30 and then a short program about Quilts of Valor.
Since the foundation started in 2003, volunteers have made more than 26,000 quilts to give to veterans of the War on Terror who have returned home with physical or psychological wounds. The twin-size quilts come in a variety of different patterns and are hand- or machine-quilted.
"We want to thank our service men and women and let them know people do care," said Paulette Hoebelheinrich, one of three coordinators who organized a Quilts of Valor chapter in Fergus Falls (www.qovf-um.org) three years ago. The group of about 50 volunteers has made more than 600 quilts distributed to veterans from St. Cloud and Superior, Wis., to Fort Knox in Kentucky, Walter Reed and other veteran facilities.
Hoebelheinrich will share the Quilts of Valor story at the St. Joseph Church event and answer questions about how others can get involved. All contributions go toward getting quilts to service people.
A freewill offering will be taken for the Quilts of Valor. St. Joseph Church is at 201 Cherry St., Bertha.
