Additional WDC cuts voted upon
The Wadena-Deer Creek school board voted to increase the budget cutting for the 2009-10 school year from $590,000 to $763,000 at Monday's monthly meeting.
Superintendent Virginia Dahlstrom was notified earlier this month by the Wadena-Deer Creek school board that budget cuts of $200,000, in addition to the $590,000 already anticipated, would have to be considered for the 2009-10 school year.
Dahlstrom was recently in St. Paul where she received grim news regarding the state's planned funding of education.
"I have been getting some urgent e-mails and letters as to needing support down in our Legislature at this point for K-12 funding," Dahlstrom said. "It looks like what is going to be happening here is that the governor will veto any tax increases that are proposed through the other forms of government and that should happen within the next two weeks. That would mean that it would come back and we would be looking at more cuts and it's not looking very pretty."
Dahlstrom has been asked by her peers and colleagues to get the message out to constituents and urge them to contact their legislators in support of K-12 education.
