Six athletes from the Wadena-Deer Creek and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale track and field teams have earned the right to compete in the Class A state meet Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.

The Wolverines will be sending Brody Wangsness, Autumn Jahnke and Danyel Post. The Raiders have qualifiers in Samuel Moore, Justin Gordon and Kasey Willis.

Wangsness lived up to his seeding in the 110 high hurdles by running a winning 16.22 in the event last Thursday at the Section 6A meet. Facing a strong south wind on the Minnesota State University-Moorhead track, Wangsness ran a 16.22 to edge Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley’s Cormick Combellick, who turned in a 16.55. Combellick later won the 300 low hurdles with a 41.37. Wangsness was 13th in the 300 field with a 47.02.

Jahnke used the same wind that hindered the running events to her advantage in the pole vault. The veteran jumper exceeded her section-qualifying jump by 14 inches to finish second with a 9-8 vault. Top honors went to Staples-Motley’s Millie Klefsass, who vaulted 10-2.

Post competed in three events but her state-qualifying performance did not come early in the meet, as it did for Wangsness. She placed ninth in the long jump with a 15-1.25 and ran 10th in the 400 with a 1:06.22 before joining the state qualifiers with a runner-up finish in the triple jump. Eight girls had better seeds going into the section meet but Post improved from a 32-8.75 qualifying jump to a second place jump of 35-2.25. Ashby-Brandon-Evansville’s Caroline Jansen won the triple with a 36-9.25.

Moore, a towering eighth-grader, found himself in the company of seniors and juniors as he went after a qualifying berth in the discus. His runner-up toss of 142-6 was only three inches short of tying a 142-9 throw by Pequot Lakes’ Travis Jacobson.

Gordon was one of four high jumpers to earn an automatic state berth in the high jump by meeting the qualifying standard of 6-2. Gordon joined Long Prairie-Grey Eagle’s Andrew Lind and Otter Tail Central’s Eric VanErp in clearing the bar at 6-3. Gordon placed second overall. West Central Area’s Dan Schack went 6-5 for the first place medal.

Willis was taking her last shot at a state trip when she set sail in the 300 low hurdles. Three girls had better seed times. Staples-Motley’s Jaelin Beachy was equal to her top seeding as she ran a 47.81. Willis took second with a 49.04.

The Class A state track and field meet is slated to begin Friday at 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s Class A events are also scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
