19-year-old man charged with assault, strangulation
A Wadena man was set to make his first appearance this week in Wadena County District Court for allegedly strangling a woman after falsely believing that she threw a bowl at him, court records said.
Wilfred Lawrence Hill II was charged March 3 for an incident Feb. 28 in Wadena. Police met with the alleged victim at a convenience store after she had walked 15 blocks in subzero temperatures to call them. The officer observed bruising on the woman's cheek and her voice was rough and scratchy, court records said. She said she and Hill had gone to a residence in Wadena to watch some movies and have some drinks. Around 4 a.m., a woman there threw a bowl across the room which hit Hill. When he awoke, the victim told police, he thought the victim had thrown the bowl, and attacked her.
He allegedly grabbed her by the throat and slapped her numerous times. She fell to the floor, and then another man allegedly held her down and punched her in the face.
The two men told police the victim has a history of drinking and making up stories. Court records said, however, that police didn't detect any scent of alcohol on the victim.
The victim said Hill had also assaulted her in 2008.
Hill was charged with domestic assault -- by strangulation and fifth-degree domestic assault.
