Prenatal Education Classes offered at Tri-County

If you are a first-time mother-to-be or would like a refresher course on preparing for childbirth, Tri-County Hospital's obstetrics department is hosting free prenatal educations classes.

Classes are instructed by Tri-County Hospital OB labor and delivery nurses, Wadena Public Health nurses and head-start professionals. Here is a rundown of the classes:

• "Prepared Childbirth" classes are for women during their last three months of pregnancy. The session includes six classes and will stress the following: breathing and relaxation techniques used during labor and delivery; breast and bottle feeding; tour of the TCH birthing suites; preparation for the birth experience; newborn care and care for mom after delivery; and more. The six consecutive classes will be held 7:30-9:30 p.m., beginning Monday, Oct. 5 in the Browne Conference Center, Room B.

• "Pregnancy--A Healthy Start" is for women in their first six months of pregnancy. The class will focus on anatomy and physiology; fetal growth and development; nutrition and fitness during pregnancy; common discomforts; and warning signs. This class will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8 in the Browne Conference Center, Room B.

• "Prenatal Refresher" is a class structured for mothers who are expecting their second or subsequent children. The class is intended for those who have had a baby before but it's been awhile, had a different coach or no coach last time and the coach needs tips; or someone who had their baby at another hospital. The course will include, but not limited to: warning signs of pregnancy and premature labor, when to go to the hospital, stages of labor and coaching tips, newborn and postpartum care, medical interventions, non-medical pain relief, breast/bottle feeding challenges and rewards, tour of maternity wing and birthing suits and more. Partners/coaches are encouraged to attend. The refresher class will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19 in the Browne Conference Center, Room A.
