Horticulturist and Author Meyer to speak at Robertson Theatre Oct. 20

Mary Meyer will talk about her book, "Ten Plants that Changed Minnesota", on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Robertson Theatre in Wadena.

One hundred and fifty years ago, vast forests of white pine covered northern Minnesota. At the end of the 19th century, the prairies attracted pioneer farmers to this area where they could grow bumper crops of wheat and alfalfa. These and others plants like the apple, American elm, corn, turfgrass, purple loosestrife, soybeans and wild rice have had an impact, both positive and negative, in the development and future of our state.

Meyer is a professor of horticultural science at the University of Minnesota and author of many popular and scholarly articles on plants. She has studied grasses as landscape plants and manages the Grass Collection at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, part of the Plant Collection Network of the American Public Garden Association.

This free program is the third in the Fall Legacy series of the Wadena County Historical Society. Nov. 3 will feature Kip and Eric Peltoniemi.
