5 years ago Excerpts from the May 8, 2003 Pioneer Journal • Barred owl released here A barred owl was released back into the wild Saturday at the Southbrook Veterinary Hospital in Wadena. The owl was found March 20 on Caroline DiGiovanni’s deck at her home two miles south of Wadena. Greg Oldakowski, DNR conservation officer, took the owl to Southbrook for an evaluation and X-rays. The owl had apparently been hit by a vehicle because it had a bad eye and wing. • Bjorge begins as high school principal Tim Bjorge has been named the new Wadena-Deer Creek High School principal and will begin his new job on July 1. Bjorge is an assistant principal for the high school in Little Falls. 10 years ago Excerpts from the May 7, 1998 Pioneer Journal • Missing woman was found safe After a weeklong search, LuAnn Pettit called home Sunday from Marine City, Mich. Apparently she had been conversing with a man over the Internet and went to Michigan to meet him. She was safe. • Timberwolf killer sought A 2-year-old female Timberwolf was found dead in a field about three miles east of Deer Creek about three weeks ago. Conservation Officer Tom Campbell of the Henning area asked for the public’s help in finding the animal’s killer. Timberwolves were considered a threatened species. 25 years ago Excerpts from the May 11, 1983 Pioneer Journal • Wadena arsenic dump site on PCA Superfund priority list Arsenic burial sites in Wadena, Perham and Morris are likely to be near the top of the Pollution Control Agency’s priority list following legislative approval of a compromise state Superfund bill May 4. During the grasshopper plague of the 1930s, the state distributed arsenic to farmers. The leftover poison was buried and has since leaked into drinking water. • Sounding off: watch your cat From the reader Sound Off column: “Somebody’s old cat has been digging in my garden, digging out onions and so forth. If they love that cat, they had better keep it home. I don’t appreciate that kind of fertilizer. This goes for dogs, too.” 40 years ago Excerpts from the May 9, 1968 Pioneer Journal • First National Bank sold Wadena’s First National Bank has been sold and the new owners, Alan Pettit, Verndale, and Merle P. Larson, of Clarissa, assumed control Wednesday, May 1. • Early morning fire destroys home Fire, which apparently started in the chimney, destroyed the Joe Hostmann farm and home early Sunday morning. 60 years ago Excerpts from the May 6, 1948 Pioneer Journal • Gov. and Mrs. Youngdahl to be guests here today Governor and Mrs. Luther Youngdahl will be in Wadena today, Thursday, as special guests of the Wadena County Women’s Republican club. • Frances Bacchus, Nurse in Wadena County, resigns Miss Frances Bacchus, Wadena County nurse since Jan. 1, 1944, tendered her resignation to the Wadena County Nursing committee at a meeting of the group in the courthouse here Wednesday evening. She accepted a job as the Pope County nurse.

National Day of Prayer to be observed here Thursday

The annual National Day of Prayer will be observed in Wadena at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 1. The faithful may gather at the flag pole at the Wadena County Courthouse Building to participate. This year will mark the 57th observance of the National Day of Prayer.

Northern Lights Chorale In Concert May 3-4

The Northern Lights Chorale will present “The Land We Love,” a collection of patriotic and early American music. The concerts are free and will be held May 3 and 4 at the following locations: • Saturday, May 3 – St. John Lutheran Church, Wadena, 2 p.m., and the United Methodist Church, Sebeka, 7 p.m. • Sunday, May 4 – First English Lutheran Church, Menahga, 7 p.m. All are welcome.
